Can't I just use a towel to stretch instead of a Stretchband?

Anything is better than nothing, so using a towel wont hurt, but it’s not very effective. Most people cheat when they stretch by rotating their hips or pelvis to make it easier. The Stretchband has been designed to loop around the waist and foot to minimize hip rotation, maintain your foot in dorsi-flexion and help isolate individual muscle groups, for the most effective type of stretch. It is also great for neural (nerve) stretching, the painful but essential type of stretching that most people try to avoid.

Try both techniques and compare the difference.

How do I know what size/colour Stretchband I need?

As a general rule, put your foot through the band to keep it on the floor and pull the band up towards your hip (tight but not on stretch). If the band reaches roughly to your hip bone you’ve got the right size.

It’s also important to remember that the band needs to loop around your waist so girth makes a difference. The wider your hips, the more likely it is that you will need a larger size.

The most universal size, considering height and level of flexibility, is the Medium (Blue) band. Green is usually for the very tall and/or very inflexible. Red is usually for kids and gymnasts.

Does the Pocket Physio colour mean something?

No. The Pocket Physio comes in 12 colours to suit a person’s mood or preference but they are all the same density. Choose the colour you like best.

What is the difference between the two sizes of Pocket Physio?

Both do the same job but one is just a bit ‘kinder’ than the other! Generally speaking, it comes down to your tolerance to pain and which muscles you are trying to trigger. Remember – tight muscles are already angry, so poking them is bound to cause a reaction, but it is a good pain and if you can stick with it, the muscle will start to relax. Start with the standard size and graduate to the MAX when you think you can tolerate more intensity.

Most athletes would benefit from the muscle release that comes from the MAX. They understand how to push through pain more than most!

How do I know if I need a big Pocket Physio or a small one?

Both sizes work in the same way but the small one is easier to hold in your hand so is most commonly used for muscles in the shoulder, forearm, knee and foot. Use the larger, Pocket Physio MAX for triggering deeper muscles by sitting on the floor and sliding it under your glutes or lying horizontally on a flat surface and rolling over it to release your hip flexors.

Will the Posture Pro help with my tight/sore lower back as well as upper back?

The Posture Pro’s primary purpose is as a Thoracic roller to assist with joint mobility in the upper back but it is not limited to this purpose.

If you don’t have a Footeez or Foam roller, you can use it to release your ITB, TFL and as glute trigger, all of which will assist in reducing lower back pain.

How often should I use my Posture Pro? Is it possible to overuse it and make my pain worse?

Keep it handy and use it whenever your neck and shoulder muscles feel tight and stiff. You need to give the muscles time to react and relax so don’t try to be too aggressive initially. Start against a wall before increasing the intensity by lying on the floor.

Muscles will start to relax as soon as you have used your Posture Pro but it may take a couple of days for the discomfort to subside completely.

What's the most effective way to use a Posture Pro? What's the most effective way to use a Posture Pro?

The best way to use the Posture Pro to release the tight muscles of your neck and upper back is to lie on it and use a ‘roll and hold’ technique to slowly move over the roller from the top of your shoulders to your mid back, and back again. If your muscles are extremely tight and painful, reduce the pressure by rolling against a wall instead. Once muscles have started to relax, pain will reduce and you can advance to the deeper muscle trigger exercises using body weight on the floor.

How is the Footeez any different to a regular foam roller? Which one should I use?

Using a foam roller to relax tight muscles is a perfectly good, general approach to recovery. However, for runners, cyclists and serious athletes, the intensity of their training and competition requires more targeted fascial releases to ensure joint mobility and range of motion is maintained.

If you just want to stay active and/or keep general aches and pains at bay, use a foam roller. If you are serious about improving performance, your chosen activity is lower limb dominant and your pain threshold is high, you need a Footeez.

If I already own the original Ice Mate, but am having Knee surgery soon, will I need to purchase an Ice Mate PRO or will my Ice Mate do the same job?

Of course the Ice Mate will do the job, but the PRO will do it better! The PRO has been designed specifically for icing both sides of a joint similtaneously for maximum pain relief, that’s why it is recommended for post surgical ankle, knee and shoulder patients.

You’ll spend a bit more time moving the ice bag around if you have the standard Ice Mate, but in terms of pain relief and swelling reduction, they are equally effective. Both have refillable ice bags and a compression strap, and it’s the cold and compression that’s doing the work!

How long should I ice my sprained ankle for?

Don’t delay. Ice and compression should be applied to an injured area as soon as possible following trauma to get the healing process started. The most critical window is the first 12-24 hours. The Ice Mate or Ice Mate PRO have been purpose-designed for this.

Alternate 20 mins on, 1 hour off for at least 12 hours even if it’s through the night. Continuing to use cold therapy for up to 72 hours will be beneficial. Crushed or cubed ice in a re-useable bag with a compression strap is the best portable option.

What's wrong with using a bag of frozen peas?

With most soft tissue injuries, the most critical window for maximum recovery effect is the first 12-24 hours. What you do to manage the body’s response to soft-tissue trauma in this window will determine how long it takes to recover and return to play.

If that’s all you have on hand when injury occurs, go for it. Applying cold immediately after injury is a vital component in the process of reducing swelling, managing pain and allowing the healing process to begin. A bag of peas will work short term to get things started but there are better options that will improve injury recovery outcomes. For the most appropriate acute injury management, keep an Ice Mate on hand whenever sport is being played. Read More

I'm a runner and my knee has just started hurting for no reason. What do I do?

There’s no such thing as ‘no reason’. There are many reasons why a person’s knee may hurt during exercise but the most common cause of pain is tightness in the ITB and lateral quad. If you did not have a specific ‘episode’ of injury i.e. falling, twisting or overextending and you don’t have any diagnosed knee degeneration, try using a fascial roller or ball to release the tension in your outer thigh muscles that is likely to be a significant contributor to your pain. If all you have is a foam roller, use that but to be most effective you need a more targeted release. Serious athletes need a Footeez fascial roller or a Pocket Physio massage ball.

In future, make sure you spend some time on a roller or ball after every running session. 10-15 minutes during a warm down recovery is sufficient to reduce the risk of tightness retuning. Remember is prevention is always better than a cure!
